DSE (Display Screen Equipment)
Work station Assessment
Incorrect use of DSE work equipment, or poorly designed workstations can lead to employees developing neck/shoulder/back pain or wrist/arm/hand discomfort.
All employees who work for an hour or more continuously on a computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone must by law carry out a DSE assessment when they first start in their position, when any changes are made to the workstation or how it is used, or if an employee develops any pain/ discomfort.
It can be difficult for an employee to carry out a self assessment when they are experiencing discomfort. This is when the observation of an experienced DSE assessor can help. It is often very simple observations, making minor adjustments and guiding an employee through changes in their daily work practice than can have long lasting benefits to working posture.
This assessment will include advice on good posture, adjusting chairs and furniture, optimising desk/workspace with consideration of daily work activity and breaks and screen adjustment.
The Therapy Toolbox can help by carrying out a one-to-one assessment using the HSE DSE checklist and through observation/discussion with the employee offer advice, make minor adjustments and where required suggestion on suitable DSE accessories to the employer to support the employee in optimising their DSE posture in the workplace.
